My late grandfather's medal citation

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS WELLS P. MC GREGOR, UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:



"For heroic achievement while serving as a Wire Team Leader of Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, Sixth Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 21 May 1945. Realizing the importance of maintaining communications during a fanatical enemy counterattack, Private First Class McGregor led his wire team through devastating hostile artillery and mortar barrages on three separate occasions during the night to repair the phones of the front line platoons and, in addition, exposed himself to the heavy enemy fire continuously while laying and repairing communication lines. By his heroic devotion to duty, platoons as well as his own company's artillery, thereby contributing materially to the successful repulse of the Japanese counterattack. Private First Class McGregor's courageous conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
